By Dawn Batteiger, Principal, James Irwin Charter Middle School

Introduction

As we welcome students and families back for a new school year, I am filled with excitement and optimism for what lies ahead at James Irwin Charter Middle School. Last year, our school community was honored to receive the Gazette Best of the Springs Gold Award. While we are proud of that accomplishment, we see it as motivation to continue growing and serving students at the highest level.

A Strong Foundation for Growth

The mission of our school remains the same. We aim to help guide students in the development of their character and academic potential through academically rigorous, content-rich educational programs. We are focused on academic excellence, strong character, and meaningful relationships. The Gold Award reflects the dedication of our teachers, staff, students, and families, and we look forward to building on that success throughout the coming year.

The Power of Clear, Purposeful Instruction

Our commitment to Direct Instruction continues to help students master essential skills, gain confidence, and achieve academic success. We remain focused on providing clear, intentional instruction that supports every learner.

Exciting New Opportunities for Students

This year brings exciting new opportunities beyond the classroom. We are thrilled to launch our new middle school football team, giving students another avenue to develop teamwork, discipline, perseverance, and school pride. We are also excited to reintroduce our competitive robotics team, where students can explore engineering, coding, innovation, and teamwork through hands-on challenges and competition.

Developing Leaders for the Future

Leadership development remains a central part of our culture. Through academics, activities, athletics, service opportunities, and student organizations, we encourage students to develop the confidence and character needed to make a positive impact.

James Irwin Charter Middle School is also proud to continue strengthening our support for military-connected students and families through our Anchored for Life program. This commitment has helped earn recognition as a Purple Star School, reflecting our dedication to creating a welcoming, supportive, and successful environment for military families. These programs and initiatives complement our academic mission and help students discover new passions, build leadership skills, and find meaningful connections within our school community.

More Excited Than Ever for the Year Ahead

While I am incredibly proud of what our school accomplished last year, I am even more excited about what comes next. With the addition of our new football team, the return of competitive robotics, the launch of our first drone competition team, and our continued support of military families through our Anchored for Life program and Purple Star School recognition, this school year promises to be filled with opportunity and achievement. The foundation is strong, the future is bright, and I truly believe the best is yet to come for James Irwin Charter Middle School.
